Newbie 1(N1) Understanding basic alphabets. No other skills. Alphabets only but no ability of spelling No practical communication skills
Newbie 2(N2) One or two words sentences. Unable to get the gist. Unable to make sentence with sufficient words Understand some separated words
Or expressions.
Basic Basic 1(B1) Can complete simple sentences but can't expand on answers. Constant pauses. Limited vocabularies but simple meanings are clear. Understand very basic words, very limited communications in social settings.
Basic 2(B2) Grammar errors make insufficient communication and comprehension in simple everyday dialogue Short text composition with simple structures.
Accuracy is limited.
Express basic needs and personal preference. Generally understood by sympathetic interlocutors accustomed to dealing with non-natives
Basic 3(B3) Can convey and cover everyday actions Enough vocabularies to understand the gist of simple paragraph with basic meanings. Get familiar with more social and personal topics.
Inter- mediate Intermediate 1 (I1) Frequently use certain structures and create sufficient sentences with basic meanings. Could understand at least 50% of native speech Limited vocabularies but wider range of structures used when composing paragraph. Fulfill basic communication and social needs
The dominant language is still evident and gaps in communication may occur.
Intermediate 2 (I2) General effective command of language.Can use some useful idioms and initiate some conversations in depth. Higher appreciation of style and familiar with certain topics and structures. Handle familiar topics successfully. Dominant language discourse structures tend to recede
They are readily understood by native speakers
Intermediate 3 (I3) Mostly over 70% of native speech understanding. Cope well with most of the situations Can read wider range of text with a higher level of appreciation. Writing accuracy is higher. Handle more complicated tasks. And communicate with more confidence. There might be some errors that are not so evident.
Advance Advance 1 (A1) Use formal and informal at ease.Effective command of taking control of the language used. Compose and read authentic text. Good degree of accuracy.
Misuse still happens.
Communicate comfortable discussing a variety of topics concretely.
Perform all Advanced-level tasks with linguistic ease, confidence and competence.
Some misuse of vocabulary may still be evident. Style may still be obviously foreign.
Advance 2 (A2) 80-90% of understanding of native speech. Still have occasional mistakes. Could conduct complex discussions. Delivery unfamiliar topics interests and able to convert to authentic wording.Almost full understanding and appreciate when reading. Communicate in the language with accuracy and fluency
May be influenced by the Superior speakers' own language patterns, rather than those of the target language.
